Who We Are
Project COOL is a nonprofit organization that places youth in the greater Grand Rapids area in summer work experience positions with local employers.
Project COOL was founded in 2004 by Mrs.Minnie Farris. In 2009 Project COOL became an official non-profit organization and is now well on its way to fulfilling Mrs. Farris’ vision of bringing together area youth and local businesses for career exploration. The program was structured so that the process from application to job completion was fostering job readiness and socialization skills as part of the overall educational process.
As a 501© (3) tax-exempt organization, we are committed to continuing the legacy created by Mrs. Farris; training underrepresented youth in the areas of life skills while preparing them for the competition and rigors of higher education and workplace assimilation.
Project COOL’s impact is far reaching. In addition to the educational and social benefits, its outcome is three-fold: it provides financial support for the students, their families and the community. To help us achieve our goal we require the employers to teach valuable work skills and instill a strong work ethic in our students. They function not only in a supervisory capacity but also as mentors.
Seminars are held with area professionals to teach students how to manage money; how to make informed decisions regarding their future goals; and how to become more positive and respectful individuals. The seminars are facilitated by community partners such as Fifth Third Bank, Spectrum Health, Huntington Bank, Lifequest Group, and Draper Group USA.
Project COOL has a volunteer Board of Director’s which is comprised of local business owners, area professionals and community members who are vested in their city’s youth. This broad range of expertise brings a unique flair to the program which helps to ensure its continued success.
